Leaders: Want to Be the Best? These 9 Traits Are Essential

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. John Quincy Adams
Are you a leader? Answer me honestly:

shareasimage-6 If you answered yes, I would expect that you are continually bettering yourself to go beyond good. Great? Outstanding? Excellent? Elegant? Strive for any, pursue all. Just don’t think you have learned everything there is to be a leader. Hubris is not a virtue. As Vince Lombardi said so well,

Leaders aren’t born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal.

We need leaders who have vision, who inspire us to be better, do better, and can unlock the potential we have to do phenomenal work. These nine traits of leadership are essential if you desire to accomplish great things, to make the world a better place.

  • Vision
  • Wisdom
  • Resolve
  • Empathy
  • Integrity
  • Respectfulness
  • Mindful
  • Inspiring
  • Listener

If people follow you, are inspired by you, look to you for direction, you are a leader. Now do what you can to be the best. Glean from the past and present undeniably great leaders among us, your team needs you.  Don’t let us down.

  1. I became a leader only after I learned how to be a mindful follower of the greatest leader of them all. A younger me thought leadership was charisma. I had charisma. But that only takes you so far. But as the years went by and heart longed for Christ more and more and my knowledge of scripture deepened, I was able to walk in a direction that people could follow with confidence. It is a humbling and serious thing to have people follow you. It requires daily check-ins with the one who leads me

  2. Well said Cynthia. Yes, the responsibility is great when you become a leader, and I thank you for being obedient and being mindful that you must be accountable to the one who called you to lead. Apart from Him, we can do nothing. Thanks for commenting!

  3. I loved your post. Ending with all the great quotes was a nice touch. To me leadership is taking people from where you find them to where they want to and are willing to go.
It’s impossible to lead them anywhere else, and trying is frustrating for both us and them.

    1. Thank you Anita. I like your thought on leadership, it is terribly frustrating to try and force someone to go where they aren’t willing, or ready for. If I can tie your comment into another quote: Rosalynn Carter said something similar: “A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.”
      Thanks again for commenting!
